India advance bilateral tourism ties with Malta and Morocco

India advanced tourism ties with its Malta and Morocco on 17 September 2018.  The first development was part of the Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu visit to Malta.

VP while making the joint Press Statement following delegation level talks with the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, at San Anton Palace, Halbalzan, Malta said that diplomatic relations between India and Malta were established soon after the independence of Malta and India see Malta as one of the most trusted partners within the EU. He further said that India was one of the first countries to recognise independence of Malta and now, we have taken the decision to open a resident mission in Malta in order to scale up our relationship. The Minister of State for Finance, Shiv Pratap Shukla, the High Commissioner of India to Malta, Rajesh Vaishnaw and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The Vice President said that India and Malta have signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) in the field of (i) Maritime Cooperation; (ii) Diplomatic Training; and (iii) Tourism Cooperation. It is a good beginning  in creating a modern, enabling framework for enhancing relations between both the countries, he added.

In the second development, ITDC inked an MoU with Government of Kingdom of Morocco for strengthening Cooperation in Tourism sector. India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (ITDC) the public sector undertaking under the aegis of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India today signed a MoU with Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development (SMIT), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of Kingdom of Morocco, for strengthening cooperation in the field of tourism.  India and Morocco share strong historical, economic and political ties.

The MoU was signed in the presence of K.J. Alphons, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism, Government of India and Mohammed Sajid, Minister of Tourism, Air Transport, Handicraft and Social Economy, Government of the Kingdom of Morocco by Ms. Ravneet Kaur, IAS, Chairperson & Managing Director (C&MD), India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and Mr. Imad Barrakad, Chairman and CEO, SMIT at The Ashok, a flagship property of ITDC. Rashmi Verma, Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Tourism graced the occasion and ther senior officials from Ministry of Tourism and both the organizations were also present during the signing.

 Speaking on the occasion Ravneet Kaur, IAS, Chairperson and Managing Director (C&MD), ITDC said “Signing of the MoU is an acknowledgement of the capabilities and core competency of ITDC and the important role it has played in development of tourism and related infrastructure in the country.”
