The Portuguese destination- Madeira, one of the Europe’s Leading Island Destination will host the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony 2019 and use the event to boost its profile on the international stage. Madeira Tourist Board will welcome hundreds of industry leaders to the event. This information was confirmed earlier by Madeira regional secretary for tourism and culture, Paula Cabaco, to a local newspaper.
She stated: “Hosting this event is of great importance, not only for the relevance of what this award involves, but also for the overall number of European tourist destinations which will be present at this ceremony. “It is an extraordinary and unprecedented opportunity to promote Madeira, as well as to optimise the islands tourism potential abroad.”
Cabaco added: “Even though this has been an aspiration on our part for quite some time, preparations to bring the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony to Madeira started in earnest last December, during the 24th edition of the World Travel Awards Grand Final, held in Vietnam.
“During that event, the World Travel Awards communicated with the Regional Secretariat for Tourism & Culture of this intention.
“As a direct result of this decision this entity is presently undergoing a week-long visit on our island as to evaluate the logistical conditions necessary to organise an event of this nature and magnitude.”
World Travel Awards group vice president Christopher Frost said: “It will be an honour for us to take the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony to Madeira for the first time.
“We will reveal the date for the event in the coming months, but I am certain the islands are an ideal host for us and I look forward to joining the international hospitality elite there next year.”

Europe’s finest travel brands revealed @ World Travel Awards 2018
Europe’s finest travel brands have been unveiled at World Travel Awards 2018 in Athens in Athens, Greece. Winners at the red carpet gala evening included Hilton Hotels & Resorts (winner of “Europe’s Leading Hotel Brand”), Madrid (“Europe’s Leading Meetings & Convention Destination”), Zurich Airport (“Europe’s Leading Airport”) and Norwegian Cruise Line (“Europe’s Leading Cruise Line”).
Portugal beat off stiff competition to be named “Europe’s Leading Destination”, whilst Turismo de Portugal was voted “Europe’s Leading Tourist Board”. Meanwhile the intriguing beauty of Madeira was acknowledged as it was named “Europe’s Leading Island Destination”. Hundreds of the leading figures of Europe’s travel and tourism industry attended the ceremony, which was staged at the historic Zappeion Megarob Hall. .
Graham Cooke, Founder & President, World Travel Awards, said: “What an evening it has been here in the incredible city of Athens, Greece. We have had the privilege of recognising many of the leading hotels, airlines and hospitality providers from destinations across Europe and my congratulations to each of them.”

In the aviation sector, Aeroflot – Russian Airlines proved a multiple winner, collecting awards for “Europe’s Leading Airline Brand”, “Europe’s Leading Airline – Business Class” and “Europe’s Leading Airline to Asia”, following a year in which the flag carrier conducted a significant fleet expansion programme as part of its global development programme. TAP Air Portugal, which is also investing heavily in fleet and service upgrades, was named “Europe’s Leading Airline to Africa”. Lufthansa was voted “Europe’s Leading Airline” and Swiss International Air Lines named “Europe’s Leading Airline – Economy Class”.
Greece’s resurgent tourism economy was recognised with the Greek National Tourism Organisation winning “Europe’s Leading National Tourism Strategy & Campaign”, whilst Lesante Blu Exclusive Beach Resort was named “Europe’s Leading New Resort”.
The Convention Centre Dublin – voted “Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre” – was also celebrating, as was Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul. The former Ottoman Palace, now transformed into an opulent hotel, was presented with the trophy for “Europe’s Leading Hotel”.
The evening marked the second leg of the WTA Grand Tour 2018 – a series of regional events to acknowledge the world’s outstanding travel brands. The tour began in April with WTA’s Middle East Gala Ceremony in Ras al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. WTA is also staging ceremonies in Hong Kong, Montego Bay (Jamaica), Guayaquil (Ecuador), Durban (South Africa) and Lisbon (Portugal).
