The trend seen with the recent booking, MakeMyTrip has seen over 400% growth in tourism to Russia for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2018 and ixigo data suggests flight searches for Russia increase by 23%.
The FIFA World Cup 2018 is one of the biggest global events this year and it coincides with one of the busiest travel time for Indians who are holidaying during the summer season. The surge in bookings for Russia this year also corresponds with multi-city travel itineraries that holiday goers have picked on our platform including cities like Volgograd, Saransk, Sochi apart from Moscow and St. Petersburg.
“We have witnessed a growth of over 400% for bookings in the time period between June-July 2018 over last year. This uptick in booking is expected to grow further as we get closer to the event dates. The Russia FAN ID visa has furthermore added ease in visa formalities for all the visitors during the world cup period. Travellers just require a match ticket and registration on the site for the visa and it is couriered at the doorstep”, added the MakeMyTrip spokesperson.
Additionally, the weather at the time of the World Cup is warm and sunny by Russian weather standards, so it’s no surprise that Indians are picking Russia as one of their top international travel picks for this summer.
According to ixigo, India’s leading travel marketplace, Russia has recorded 23% month-on-month increase in flight searches from India during the tournament. The growth has been accelerated with favourable initiatives by the government such as visa-free entry for people with World Cup tickets, from 10 days before the first game and up to 10 days after the last game. ixigo data reveals that 48% Indians, travelling during the tournament, are planning to travel solo, followed by 16% with families and 12% as couples.
With June being one of the best times to visit Russia, travellers are opting to stay for a duration of 8.5-10 days to be a part of the football extravaganza whilst discovering nearby places in the host cities. Commenting on the findings, Aloke Bajpai, ixigo CEO & Co-founder said, “As the excitement for the World Cup continues to build up, more and more people are planning their travel to Russia. We’re expecting a 25% surge in travel bookings over the coming days. Additional discounts by airlines and travel portals such as ixigo, are helping football enthusiasts take their dream trip to Russia for the FIFA World Cup to support their favourite teams.” The data also shows that around 73% travellers are planning to travel to Moscow for the opening ceremony at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, followed by 16% and 4% to St. Petersburg and Rostow respectively.
