Before moving any further, we need to understand what occupational therapy is? The term “Occupation” used here is different from “vocation”, that is no monetary issues involved. An occupation is any small or big meaningful activity that we do every day. Therefore, occupations include many roles, for example, being a parent, friend, spouse, student, toddler or musician. We generally don’t think about our daily occupations until we have trouble performing them.
Everyone has occupations—from the toddler whose occupations are play and learning to develop important skills, to the older adult whose occupations are engaging with family and friends and managing his or her home. If you come across any accident or inflicted with some injury, your valued occupations may be disrupted. It is this time when we realize what all myriad occupations or small tasks that we accomplish on regular basis.
Occupational therapy services may include comprehensive evaluations of the client’s home and other environments (e.g., workplace, school), recommendations for adaptive equipment and training in its use, and guidance and education for family members and caregivers.
Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, in which the focus is on adapting the environment to fit the person, and the person is an integral part of the therapy team. Therefore, the occupation is the central core for an occupational therapist.
World occupational therapy day is observed since 2010 globally. A new theme is chosen every year for spreading awareness about Occupational Therapy on a Global platform. This year WFOT theme for world OT day is “Inform Inspire Influence”. Last year’s theme “making it together” got a huge response from around forty two countries including the All India Occupational Therapists Association (AIOTA).
